Chelsea 2002:
A collaborative garden with Houston based sponsors Beth & Charles Miller, Thames Water, Clifton Nurseries & architect Sarah Wigglesworth. The design concept was to convey the aesthetic processes of water filtration & purification. A fully working exhibit, the filtration process was powered by sculptural photovoltaic cells (solar panels) set within a natural reed bed. The garden included a modern timber walkway, glazed walls and contemporary garden pavilion (designed by Sarah Wigglesworth).
Award: Silver Medal
Contractor: Clifton Nurseries Ltd
Image: Solar panels on thin swaying metal rods in reed bed.
Solid limestone canterlevered steps access the pavilion, with “straw-bale” glazed curtain walling behind.
Contemporary timber decking “floats” over the reeds. A contemporary garden pavilion, constructed from plywood sheets & steel, is located on a raised terrace to the rear of the garden.
To illustrate the filtration process to the public, galvanised steel water rills were located at level changes within the reed bed.
